Hopes high for the finale: Paddock prepares for British GT’s Donington Decider

Paddock Motorsport heads into the British GT Championship season finale this weekend at Donington Park aiming to continue its current strong run of form with the McLaren 720S GT3 Evo.
Mark Smith and Martin Plowman will again handle the black-and-pink #9 McLaren and go into the finale full of confidence following a stunning warm up at the Derbyshire track during the GT Cup round last weekend.
Driving solo, American racer Smith dominated the event, winning all four races – a mixture of sprint and endurance outings – regaining his lead in the GT3 Championship in the process. The results bring Smith’s tally of GT Cup wins this season to a remarkable 11 from the 18 races held so far.
Beyond the headline stats, the additional mileage has also allowed the team to refine the setup of the McLaren GT3 and helped Smith to unlock more of the car’s potential through the additional seat time and confidence-boosting success. Donington is also the British track Smith knows best, having made his British GT debut with Paddock at the finale three years ago
The combination of these factors means the team enters the final British GT round in a strong position. Even though British GT represents a step up in the level of competition, Paddock has established itself as a top-five contender across this season. A big points score in the finale would be the perfect way to cap what has been an impressive season of development.

Mark Smith says: “I am greatly looking forward to Donington Park. During the successful GT Cup weekend I was finding little things with the car and with my driving technique that were yielding a bit of time. With so many fast drivers in British GT it makes for a very tight group on pace, so I’m really hoping to see these little tricks add up and translate to some tangible improvement. I can’t wait.”
Paddock Motorsport will also face double duty this weekend with its McLaren Trophy Europe team in action for its final round at Circuit Paul Ricard in France. This weekend 2023 McLaren Trophy 570S champion David Foster will join Thomas Holland aboard the #9 Pro-Am Artura Trophy Evo, and Tim Docker will continue solo in the #78 Am class car.
Team founder and pro GT3 driver Martin Plowman says: “It’s a big weekend ahead for the entire team, but one we cannot wait for. In British GT terms, I’m very excited to see what we can achieve. Mark drove better than he perhaps ever has during the GT Cup weekend and is now reaching a level where he’s truly challenging the car’s limits and finding those extra split seconds that make all the difference. The car is performing very well and we believe we have a solid set up. If we can put that all together, then we could be in for a special weekend.
“On the McLaren Trophy side, it’s been a fantastic first season of European competition for us, claiming multiple race wins and podium finishes. Welcoming David to the team – a McLaren Trophy champion – is great and I’m sure he’ll gel well with Thomas and they can be in the mix for more silverware. All the best to them and to Tim in the Am class, and let’s finish the year on a high!”
