Paddock pockets podiums in superb McLaren Trophy Europe opener

Paddock Motorsport began its 2026 McLaren Trophy Europe campaign in electric fashion with two podium finishes at Monza last weekend, where Callum Davies and Luca Magnussen clinched a superb second place overall on their series debut.
The latter’s achievement came against the odds in the first of two intense races at the Italian circuit, as a fast-starting Davies climbed from seventh to third early on, before sportscar rookie Magnussen further improved to launch Paddock’s assault in style. Steven Lake and Maximilian Tarillion added a Pro-Am trophy to the collection, with third in class the following day, while David Coelho and Matthew Higgins banked solid points in their own Pro-Am entry.
The squad travelled to the famous Temple of Speed with its biggest ever McLaren Trophy entry, the trio led by the #23 pairing of Magnussen and Davies in the Pro class, alongside two Pro-Am Arturas for the respective combinations of Lake/Tarillion and Higgins/Coelho.

A tight Qualifying session on Saturday morning ended with Davies sitting seventh in the overall times, while debutant Lake impressed with an effort good enough for third in the competitive Pro-Am class for the #7 machine, with Coelho just two places further back in the #50 Artura. Attention quickly shifted to the first of the weekend’s two 45-minute races, and it was Davies who blew his opposition away from row four when the lights went out. He swept through into the top four heading into the tight first chicane, only to further improve to third spot as he out-dragged the sliding Alessandro Fabi on corner exit.
The British driver gave chase to Largim Ali across the remainder of his stint before handing over to Danish ace Magnussen, who made a bold and decisive pass on Ali’s co-driver Kristian Brookes around the outside at the opening chicane to claim second place, and an excellent podium finish for the Paddock crew. Lake briefly improved to second in Pro-Am early on in a great scrap with Erik Behrans, he and Tarillion eventually coming home a close fourth in class after battling a drop in power. Coelho and Higgins finished sixth in Pro-Am, with Higgins earning bragging rights for setting the fastest lap of the race in a superb stint.
On Sunday morning, Higgins flew to seventh overall on the grid and third-best of the Pro-Am entries, two ahead of Tarillion in the class after a red flag cost he and Magnussen the chance to improve their times. In a shortened second encounter, Higgins battled it out with Oliver Webb in the opening stages, fighting back after losing out initially on a tight first lap. It would be Tarillion who starred on this occasion, however, making a key pass on Webb at Parabolica and inheriting third place in Pro-Am for himself and Lake when Coelho - taking over from Higgins – slid off the road at Ascari just before the race was halted early after a big accident.
Magnussen had started 16th overall and was keen to make progress up the order, which he did swiftly. He climbed four places early on before surviving a squeeze into the run-off at the opening corner a lap later. Turn 1 would be the scene for an incident that halted Magnussen’s charge as he was caught in a tangle with Alessio Deledda while attempting a brave move to pass. He and Davies eventually finished 14th overall, just inside the Pro top 10.
Heading home with a haul of silverware, the Paddock Motorsport team is next in McLaren Trophy action at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium across 24-27 June, supporting the iconic CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa.

Luca Magnussen said:
“Race one was fantastic to get P2 on our debut. It was incredible! It was my first weekend in GTs, and there were a lot of ups and downs. It went great on Saturday, but we need to maybe work on Qualifying pace, but that’s something to focus on. I was just delighted to get that first podium so early. It’s a shame about the contact in race two. I tried my usual overtake at Turn 1 and wasn’t given any space and we made contact, so that’s a shame. Myself and Callum are a great match, so it’s a good start to our season together.”
Matt Higgins added:
“It’s been a really good weekend overall. David [Coelho] has come on massively over the weekend and his driving technique has improved leaps and bounds as he gets acclimatised to the car. I felt really comfortable for much of the weekend, and I was really pleased to have the fastest lap in Race 1, which shows the sort of pace we had. There’s still a few areas we can improve upon, but it’s been good and I’m already looking forward to Spa.”
Maximilian Tarillion said:
“I really enjoyed the weekend and I was super happy to finish it with a podium on my first weekend in the car... new championship, new team and first visit to Monza! We struggled a bit with top speed at the start of the weekend but the team worked so hard to find the issue and we changed many things to try and get it right and for sure it was better for the final day, so I want to thank the entire team for their support. Working with Steve was brilliant. We were like good friends from the start and I learned a lot from him, especially some tricks on getting the best from new tyres. It was a weekend full of learning, and I can't wait for the next one.”
Paddock Motorsport team principal Martin Plowman said:
“I’m really pleased with how the entire team performed this weekend, especially in some really challenging conditions with the extreme track temperatures and the heat in the car. I’m delighted for Luca and Callum, second place on their debut is a superb result and I have no doubt that can be the first podium of many. David and Matthew progressed really well across the weekend, with Matthew showing his raw pace with a fastest lap and David adapting quickly to this style of racing. Maxi and Steven capped the weekend with a great third place, and it was just reward for their hard work across the event. Even though they didn’t have the pre-season mileage to draw on, they got up to speed incredibly quickly and scored two impressive results. The whole team is already focusing ahead to Spa where we can hopefully continue this kind of form.”
