GT Cup: Promising but frustrating weekend for Paddock Motorsport at Brands Hatch
GT Cup Report - Rounds 5,6,7&8, Brands Hatch GP
The second GT Cup meeting of the season was a strange one for Paddock Motorsport, fighting through a lot of bad luck to come out with some decent results - but it was almost so much better.
We began with four test sessions on the Indy circuit on the Friday, during which the #44 GT3 car developed a problem; on Saturday morning, the car was withdrawn from the weekend’s entry list.
Then another problem came up as Adam Hatfield reported he was unwell, and also would not be able to compete. Moh Ritson was drafted in as a last-minute replacement in the #25 McLaren.
That made for an unusual weekend with one less car than usual; running only 2 cars, both in the GTH category, and with one of those having a different line-up than expected.
Kavi Jundu and Tehmur Chohan started Saturday’s races in the #25 and #26 respectively, with Chohan and Tom Roche finishing 5th in both the sprint and pit-stop races. On Sunday, it was Roche in the car for the sprint, and he finished 4th, with our #26 being the leading McLaren car in the GTH category.
Chohan and Roche looked set to improve on that in the damp pit-stop race. Chohan had been fighting for the lead of the race, and a place on the podium was certainly within reach. But with just a few minutes remaining, Roche was forced to pit with what seemed to be a puncture. That dropped him down to P7, but the stop did not solve the problem as it proved to be a suspension issue, and the car was ultimately forced to retire.
The #26 car meanwhile, finished 10th in both of the sprint races, and 6th in both pit-stop races, an impressive effort from Kavi in his first ever Brands Hatch races and from Moh after his late call-up.
Although we didn’t get the podium we were after, we did still manage to take home some decent points, with the #26 car now 4th in the GTH standings with 67 points, and the #25 car 12th with 28.
